Everyone feels that they are "normal," because what they do and how they present themselves is perfectly natural to them. The problems start when there's a troublesome disconnect between self image and public image. But this is always a fluid proposition, and in the U.S., especially California, one is encouraged to reinvent one's self image incessantly. Here in San Francisco, the opportunity to express ourselves more openly is greater than many other cities in the world. Outsiders are embraced and accepted. We sort of live on the Island of Misfit Toys- the place where people who don't really fit in anywhere else congregate and thrive. It's beautiful place to be.
