Today living rooms are seen very differently than they were in previous generations. Living rooms weren't occupied during actual living- they were "off limits" and used only when company came over. Now the living room has been reclaimed and is used for much more than special occasions. This increase in multiple uses means that lighting must be flexible as well, and using only recessed downlights in the living room puts people in an unflattering light. Although entertaining is still done in the living room, homeowners are the ones who spend the most time there. The first concern is to provide adequate light for day-to-day activities, then layer that with options for entertaining.
