Lighting Exterior Spaces: a Twist on Tradition- AIA SF

The landscape lighting industry was the first to embrace LED technology. Now, as LEDs themselves have improved in color temperature options, color rendering (CRI), and dimmability, it’s time to rethink how we light our exterior spaces, using this new box of crayons. Light layering is still the cornerstone of a well thought out design. Blending task, accent, decorative and ambient sources creates outdoor rooms which expands the homeowners’ living and entertaining space beyond the four walls.

Join internationally recognized residential lighting designer Randall Whitehead ( Your Lighting Doctor) at San Francisco AIA offices for a fresh look at outdoor lighting with LEDs.

Randall Whitehead's Fashion Forecast: Lighting Trends for Kitchens & Baths: Lightovation at Dallas Market Center

As LEDs continue to stride their way into lighting design, they have made their mark on two of the most important rooms in the home. Energy-efficient and earth-friendly do not equal clinical and boring. Light emitting diodes are now so very fashion forward. They can make colors pop or create an alluring glow. They are weaving their way into crystal, glass, fabric and wood. So grab your seat along the catwalk and get ready to be amazed. LEDs are going to, as Tim Gunn says, “make it work." Presented by Residential Lighting and sponsored by Bulbrite, Craftmade, Livex, Satco and Tech Lighting.

Delicious Illumination: Randall at A Light Affair

RDW-Light-Affair.png

Randall Whitehead, a regular guest expert on HDTV and Martha Stuart Living Radio, will act as your guide to the best of the emerging alternative light sources, while taking you on a roller coaster ride of good and bad lighting. This presentation will show you how to incorporate energy efficient sources into a comprehensive and inviting design, giving a look that feels like incandescent. The quality of illumination remains with the added benefit of reduced wattage and fixtures that can last a very, very long time. As newer versions of LEDs are coming onto the market, learning what to look for on the label can go a long way in making more informed decisions about the products that you select. Some of the terminologies will be familiar, but some may be new to you. Whether you are using LED sources or not, the basic premise of good lighting design, called light layering, remains the same. This is when different functions of light- task, accent, ambient and decorative are used in combination to create a cohesive and flexible illuminated environment. This technique has not changed with the introduction of alternative light sources, but what we choose can make or break the success of the lighting design.

Learning Objectives:

  • Become familiar with light layering, the basic premise of good lighting design.
  • Learn how to incorporate energy efficient sources into a comprehensive and inviting design, giving a look that feels like incandescent.
  • Become familiar with the major factors in how we perceive illumination and also how the colors of objects within a space are affected.
  • Become familiar with the terminology used to describe color properties and light output, so you can make informed decisions when selecting lighting products.

We suggest you arrive early for seminars. Seating is limited. They are extremely popular and will fill up fast. SEATING WILL BE ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVED BASIS. Registration for A Light Affair expo does not guarantee a seat in the seminars.
