Cutting edge architecture has come to Modesto,
California. The owners of this amazing custom
residence worked closely with architect Conrad
Sanchez of Blue Design Studios, lighting designer
Randall Whitehead and interior designer Nicki West to
create a home around their extensive collection of
established and emerging artists. The result is a
striking and cohesive collaboration that shows how a
team of professionals can create something that
flows seamlessly between all the specialties
involved. This amazing team also includes the
builder, Mark Sweet of Blue Build Inc. and the
electrical contractor, Bruce Trussler of Kirkes
Electric whose combined talents were able to create
substance from inventive concepts. This project
truly embodied the team approach to design where ideas flowed
freely between all involved. The result says
it all.
The striking sculptural quality of the home's entrance is accentuated by
layers of light that add depth and dimension. The
vermillion glass doors glow invitingly from within.
Two backlit slots of frosted glass flank the overhang and add
emphasis to the horizontal layout of the facade.
As guests cross the bridge into the main house it opens into
a wide gallery space featuring two large scale paintings by
David Maxim. In the center a metal horse sculpture by
Deborah Butterfield offers a greeting. Square aperture low
voltage recessed fixtures made by Lucifer Lighting highlight
the art while playing off the clean geometric lines of the
architecture.
A pendant fixture by Ingo Maurer plays off the layered
angularity of the architecture, and like others in the
house, compliments the owners' modern art collection.
Four Flotation pendant fixtures by Ingo Maurer add a
human scale to the living room. Subtle accent lights give
visual punch to the art and the tablescape. The California Live Oak trees
beyond the windows are naturalistically illuminated at night
and prevent the windows from becoming black mirrors.
