Many San Francisco living spaces are former storefronts. This space, located in the Portrero Hill District, has had many incarnations, including a model train store, TV repair shop and a beauty salon. The homeowner decided to turn it into a media room and called in interior designer Katie Anderson to work out a game plan. The result is a refreshing and multi-functional home theater space that also functions as a second living room and guest room (the sofa pulls out into a queen-size bed).

The old storefront (facing south) as workers ready the space for demolition.

The space is totally transformed. Low voltage recessed adjustable fixtures highlight art and table tops. A pair of pendant fixtures by Foscarini add a soft ambient illumination. A swing arm lamp offers reading light at the leather, while the Japanese paper lantern adds a decorative touch.

In the Northwest corner an Indian bookcase covers the wall where the closet door was located before the remodel. The glass block appears to be illuminated when the wall behind it is washed with light.

beginning of the remodel.

In the Northeast corner the green oval table from India and painting by Susan Moss appear to be illuminated by the Noguchi lantern. In reality, the illumination comes from a pair of recessed adjustable fixtures.
